At
the National Meeting of the Order of the Arrow in 1948 it was
decided that the various areas (each of the twelve regions in
the BSA was divided into areas) should elect an area chief and
that the area chiefs would plan the National Order of the Arrow
Conferences. At that time, the state of Alabama was a part
Region V. Most of Alabama, including Cowikee Lodge, was
assigned to area V-a.
Area V-a
In 1952, Area V-a
held its first area Order of the Arrow conference at Camp
Tukabatchee. The lodges in area V-a in 1952 were: Cherokee 50,
Achunanchi 135, Alibamu 179, Cowikee 224, White Fang 322,
Yustaga 385, Aracoma 481.
Conferences have
been held every year since 1952, usually in April. The
conferences are hosted by the various lodges at their council
camp on a rotation basis. Cowikee Lodge has hosted the
conference seven times: 1957, 1963, 1971, 1978, 1985, 1993 and 2004.
In 1957, White Fang
322 changed their name to Woa Cholena 332. In 1958, Woa Cholena
322 changed its name for one year to War Eagle 322 in honor of
Auburn University winning the National Championship in football.
In 1959, War Eagle 322 changed its name back to Woa Cholena 322.
Area V-e
In 1965 the area
boundaries were revised. The lodges in the area remained
unchanged, but the area designation was changed to area V-e.
Section SE-4A
In 1973 the Boy
Scouts of America reduced the number of regions in the country
from twelve to six. Alabama and Florida became a part of the
Southeastern Region. The OA changed the area designation to
section. Area V-e became section SE-4A. Yustaga 385 was moved to
section SE-6A and Kaskanampo 310 joined the section.
Section SE-3
In 1982 the sections
were realigned. Yustaga 385 rejoined the section which had been
designated section SE-3.
Section SR-8
In 1993 the Boy
Scouts of America reduced the number of regions in the country
from six to four. Alabama and Florida became a part of the
Southern Region. Chattahoochee 204 and Ini-To 324 joined the
section which had been designated section SR-8.
Section SR-8B
In 1998 the sections
were realigned. Chattahoochee 204 and Ini-To 324 left the
section. In 2000 Cherokee 50, Achunanchi 135 and Kaskanampo 310
merged to form Coosa 50. In 2000, to celebrate the lodge’s
sixtieth anniversary, Alibamu 179 changed its name, for one
year, back to Alabama 179, its original lodge name. The section
was designated section SR-8B.
Section SR-4N
In 2002 the sections
were again realigned. Coosa 50 left the section and Pilthlako
229, Immokalee 353 and Alapaha 545 became new members of the
section designated SR-4N.
The members of
section SR-4N were: Alibamu 179, Cowikee 224, Pilthlako 229,
Woa Cholena 322, Immokalee 353, Yustaga 385 and Alapaha 545.
Section SR-1B
In 2008 the sections
were again realigned. Alibamu 179, Pilthlako 229, Immokalee 353,
and Alapaha 545 left the section and Watonala 169, Ashwanchi
Kinta 193, and Ti'ak 404 became new members of the
