Adult Training

Every Scout Deserves a Trained Leader!
Every Leader deserves training so he/she can successfully deliver the scouting program!

  • Cub Scout Leaders are considered trained when they have completed Youth Protection, This Is Scouting, and Cub Scout Leader Specific training for their position.
  • Boy Scout, Varsity, Venturing and Sea Scout Leaders are considered trained when they have completed Youth Protection, This Is Scouting, Leader Specific Training, and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills.
  • Pack or Troop Committee Members are considered trained when they have completed Youth Protection, This Is Scouting, and Committee Specific Training.

Training of adults to successfully deliver the Boy Scout program has evolved into a well-presented, thorough, curriculum of courses to be completed in sequence. Here are the courses you need to fulfill your commitment of an adult leader.

Youth Protection Training *

Youth Protection Training ensures boys (and girls) involved in scouting are kept safe. At least one adult on every Scout outing must be Youth Protection Trained.  Before being involved with boys, EVERY adult must take Youth Protection Training.

Fast Start Training *

The first step for any new adult volunteer in a Pack or Troop, no matter what the position may be. The Fast Start training is short and should be taken as soon as possible after you have accepted a leadership position. The Fast Start program has been designed to provide an immediate comfort level for new leaders and enables them to say, 'I can do this!', but it should be soon followed by more comprehensive training.

This Is Scouting *

The next step in training for adult leaders who have completed Fast Start Training. New Leader Essentials is an introductory session that highlights the values, aims, history, funding, and methods of Scouting. It addresses how these aims and methods are reached in an age-appropriate style within Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Varsity Scouting, and Venturing. Ideally, all unit-based volunteers-Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity Scout, and Venturing leaders-take this session at the same time, so they understand that they are all striving for the same results with the youth they serve. Each leader completes This Is Scouting training only once.

Leader Specific Training

Once a volunteer has a solid overview of the scouting program, training for a specific Scouting position continues through Leader Specific training. This training provides the specialized knowledge a new leader needs to assume a leadership role. Because each course is designed for a specific leadership position, the training time varies. This training is classroom-led. Leader Specific training has been developed for the following positions and their assistants:

  • Tiger Cub den leaders
  • Cub Scout den leaders
  • Webelos den leaders
  • Cubmasters
  • Pack committee members
  • Scoutmasters
  • Troop committee members

Outdoor Leader Skills

Outdoor skills are critical to the success of the Scouting program. Training in outdoor skills is required before taking scouts on outings.

  • Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills will provide Boy Scout, Varsity, and Venturing leaders with the basic outdoor skills information needed to start and guide a program the right way. Completion of this course is the required outdoor training for all Scoutmasters and assistant Scoutmasters as well as Crew Advisors. The skills taught are based on the outdoor skills found in The Boy Scout Handbook. The course is normally a day and a half long.
  • BALOO - Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation for Cub Scout leaders is a one-day training event that introduces participants to the skills needed to plan and conduct Pack outdoor activities, particularly pack camping. This training is required for any adult who is in charge of planning a pack campout, and it is required that at least one adult per pack complete BALOO training in order to apply for tour permits.
  • OWL - Outdoor Webelos Leader Training is for all Webelos leaders. This training course covers the skills & resources needed to teach the outdoor activity badges and helps to provide good & safe outdoor experiences. Completion of this training is required before a Webelos den can go on a campout.

Wood Badge for the 21st Century

Wood Badge, is the premier training program for all Scout leaders in the Boy Scouts of America. This includes all Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity and Venturing Leaders, District and Council Committee members as well as Professional Scouters. Wood Badge is designed to train adult volunteers using the latest leadership skills and techniques. It is once in a life time training experience.

The Trainer's EDGE

The Trainer's EDGE replaces the Trainer Development Conference (BSA 500) as the required train-the-trainer course for Wood Badge and NYLT staffs. It is meant to supplement the practice offered through Wood Badge and NYLT staff development, with a focus on the participant, while raising the level of skill a trainer brings to the staff experience. Only practice can polish these skills, but this course is intended to "train the trainer" on behaviors and resources while offering hands-on experience in methods and media.

Youth Training

Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops

ILST is a course designed to teach Scouts with leadership positions about their new roles and how to most effectively reach success in that role. It is intended to help Boy Scouts in leadership positions within their troop understand their responsibilities and to equip them with organizational and leadership skills to fulfill those responsibilities. ILST is the first course in the series of leadership training offered to Boy Scouts and is a replacement for Troop Leadership Training. Completion of ILST is a prerequisite for Boy Scouts to participate in the more advanced leadership courses National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) and the National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience (NAYLE).

Introduction to Leadership Skills for Crews

ILSC is a course designed to teach crew members with leadership positions about their new roles and how to most effectively reach success in that role. It is intended to help Venturers in leadership positions within their crew understand their responsibilities and to equip them with organizational and leadership skills to fulfill those responsibilities. ILSC is the first course in the series of leadership training offered to Venturers and is a replacement for Venturing Leadership Skills Course. Completion of ILST is a prerequisite for Boy Scouts to participate in the more advanced leadership courses National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) and the National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience (NAYLE).

Welcome to Den Chief Training *

Boy Scouts wishing to become den chiefs will take this online course as part of their training to become a den chief. The module identifies den chief responsibilities and tasks, and describes the den chief’s relationship to the adult den leaders and how that relates to the den chief’s activities with the den. After finishing the online training, den chief candidates print their certificate of completion and undergo further training with their adult den leaders

Venturing Crew Officers Orientation

This training module is geared primarily to Venturing youth that are elected into positions as officers within their Venturing crew, but it can also be used by adult leaders to learn the duties of the officers in the crew. This course is very useful for youth officers to fully understand their roles and responsibilities as it relates to Crew Officers Briefings and Seminars. This course will help the youth develop an annual plan of activities for the crew, as well as acquiring leadership and team-building skills

Woodlore Camping School (unique program offered only in the Alabama-Florida Council)

Woodlore emphasizes the Patrol Method, Leadership Skills, and the practical application of Pioneering style camping. Scouts build their own campsite, spend a day as leader of their patrol, and earn the Pioneering Merit Badge. Woodlore graduates gain confidence in their personal outdoor ability while learning to function as part of a group.

National Youth Leadership Training

National Youth Leadership Training is an exciting, action-packed program designed for councils to provide youth members with leadership skills and experience they can use in their home troops.

National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience

The National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience (NAYLE) is an exciting program where young men enhance their leadership skills in the Philmont backcountry. Scouts will expand upon team-building and ethical decision-making skills learned in National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT).
